Quite some time ago it was pointed out to me that all my "girls" and all the women that I was attracted to (news casters, reporters, movie characters, complete strangers, etc) all had flaming red hair. I hadn't really noticed before, however after it was brought up, I realized that it was increasingly clear that I had an obsession. I decided to share these people with you, I've had the wonderful opportunity of meeting a few of them.
Agnes Moorehead. Most of you know her as Endora from Bewitched, but you'd be foolish to think that that was the best of her career. I found her to be absolutely perfect in Mystery Radio Theater's "Sorry Wrong Number". I also loved her in The Bat, one of her few starring film roles (with the wonderful Vincent Price). She often had small roles playing the meddling neighbor or friend usually part of high society.... All That Heaven Allows is a great example of that. Also check out What's The Matter With Helen.... a religious experience.
Bette Midler. This is the woman (other than my own mother) that taught me to cuss. Outragous Fortune and Ruthless People are 2 of the best comedies in history. Although she's been sporting blonde since the 90's she is a true red head. Her special "'Ol' Red Hair Is Back" shows off her comedic and entertaining skills. I recently saw her in Vegas, and although she's not as "brass" as she once was she can still put on a amazing show. I was impressed with the size of the show and the quality of the performance. Sadie Shelton was my inspiration...... Caprice Feldman was one of my favorite characters...truly divine.
Cher. She once said "Living your life the way you want to live it is the most important thing, so if you have to pay small prices along the way, it's not important." I couldn't agree more. Cher has had an amazing career. Her role in Tea With Mussolini is my favorite. She showed style, grace and her amazing ability to act. She looks flawless and I absolutely can not wait to see her in Vegas in August. She's a wonderful entertainer and never ceases to amaze me. Recently she was asked "Would you ever do Dancing With The Stars?" She responded "I have a fucking Oscar, I don't hardly think so." She's ageless and whatever vat of porceline she was dipped in, I look forward to bathing in when I get older.
Kate Pierson. Kate is a spunky, fun and energetic gal. She like Cher is a Taurus and anyone that knows anything about astrology can tell that she is, purely by her personality. I love to watch her perform and she's been doing so for over 30 years. She is a great performer and someone that seems comfortable in her own skin... no matter how stretched out it gets. The B-52's newest album is great and she is the glue that holds it together.
Reba McEntire. Reba is the Queen Of Country. There is no other like her, nor will there ever be. I saw her in Vegas last year and she was fantastic. She can put on an amazing show and make it look effortless. She's so good to her fans and appears to the type of mom that all others should aspire to be. Her relationship with her husband, Narvel is inspiring. Her signature trills and distinctive voice are incomperable. This is one of the strongest, sweetest and entertaining women of our time. I've had the pleasure of meeting her a few times and they are memories I'll cherish for all time.
Shirley MacLaine. "I do not need a man to rectify my existace, for I know that the most profound relationship I'll ever have, is the one with myself." For me that is a significant and profound statement. Shirley has always provided me a path to explore myself, my feelings, my purpose and allowed me to feel good about it. Her dancing talent is now overlooked, but she has better legs than Tina could ever dream of. Her best roles are Aurora Greenway (although she was blonde in that role), Madame Sousatzka and Yoko Mori. I think her body of work speaks for herself, however I suspect she'll always be underrated. Her humble, yet strong presence always draws me in. Her most endearing character was Charity Hope Valentine.... "Wow, this place is sure full of celebrities. I'm the only one in here I've never heard of." However my favorite line was in Mrs. Winterbourne: "You heard her dear..... Fuck Off!"
